My Rating: 4 stars out of 5
Genre: Chick Lit, Romance, Contemporary
I seem to have a thing for reading about long-term romances / first loves. I think they are definitely my most favourite kind of books to read. And with this being of a similar nature, of course I couldn’t help loving it!
Andy and Rachel once meet at the hospital when they’re 8 years old…and destiny keeps bringing them together through different stages of their lives. Rachel’s character goes through different stages before she truly finds what she wants to do with her life, and Andy is on a journey to achieving his dreams. I loved how motivated and strong Andy’s character was. How he saw the world for what it really was but wasn’t put off by it. With Rachel, she also possesses a strength and knowledge to go after what she truly wants and these are qualities about these characters which I truly admired.
This book to me represented so many things; multi-cultureless, daddy issues, poverty, doing something with your life regardless of what destiny decrees. And most importantly making the correct choices. The journey’s that each character took is something which makes you think deeper about how things play out for different people and how people can often miss out on chances.
I also couldn’t help but think about people out there who often have to make the wrong choices due to not having enough money to support their families and then the blame coming on a certain race. It’s a topic I feel strongly about and because we are actually shown further than stereotypes, is one of the reasons why I would highly recommend reading this book.
I liked how both Rachel and Andy were from completely different backgrounds in terms of religion, upbringing, race and social class but they still managed to get along just fine. Because really all those are just minor details when compared to how well two people can get along regardless of those factors. They both went through different tribulations in their lives but it still was significant in its own way.
The fact that we are taken through different journey’s in their lives is also one thing I really liked about this book. For me, it helped me understand each character better. I’m a sucker for these kind of things especially when it comes to long lost romances.
Overall, I think this is a book recommended for everyone. If you like the romance genre then I think this will be a really interesting and enjoyable read. The characters are ones you can’t help but fall for and the storyline itself keeps you absorbed in its world. Love it!
