I’ll start by saying, that whilst in the beginning of this book, I had trouble concentrating and I kinda went through a mini book slump as well. I thought I wouldn’t get in to this book but boy was I wrong.
I was up till 3 am last night finishing it because I was so hooked. I just couldn’t wait to figure out their story. Evie and Adam were together at 18, 10 years ago, to the point where they got married a year later, and then a week after Evie up and left without a single word. He hadn’t heard from her in all those years. Until she moved back in town and he sees her again. 10 years’ worth of anger and frustration at being abandoned is felt by Adam. What could Evie possibly have to say for herself?
“How do I tell him that leaving him was the hardest thing I ever had to do, and it broke me?”
One thing I really liked about this book was the author’s ability to create a ‘tense’ environment and actually have the reader feel it too. Even though I saw that ‘secret’ from a mile off, I still felt the tension and suspense that was going on. It makes you want to not stop reading until you find out everything! I really have to applaud to the author’s writing style for this. I would definitely say it is worth a read, just be patient!
I loved the overall story of Evie and Adam. How it all started off for them, gosh it was adorable, and who doesn’t love a good love story? I enjoyed their journey from beginning to end, it was bittersweet in places and I hurt for them both at times with all that was lost but it was executed really well. I think if you are a sucker for these kind of stories then you will enjoy this one.
What didn’t work: As you can see, there were things which could have been improved so I wouldn’t have experienced my initial hesitance. Firstly, I think the flash backs were fairly too long than they should have been. I feel the detail shouldn’t have been as much as it was, simply because it was the past and the focus should have been more on the present. I was always too curious to know about Evie and Adam in the now and what was going on with them. But I must admit still, there was always some sort of suspense factor at the end of each chapter which sort of made it work too. Secondly, in the beginning, teenage Adam seemed too cheesy for my liking. That could have probably been toned down a little.
Overall, this was an enjoyable read, regardless of the few downfalls I experience in the beginning. Just be a little patient if the same happens with you guys because I promise you, it gets really addictive after a while!
