My Rating: 5 stars out of 5
Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy
A really well put together and well written story. I was so excited to be transferred back into the shadow hunter world, because if you’ve read the mortal instruments or the clockwork princess, then you know it is like no other. The author gave me exactly what I needed and reminded me what it was like to be lost in her imaginative creations.
This story is five years forward from where the mortal instruments series ended and Emma Carstairs and Julian Blackthorn. After the dark war, they were all young and left with no guardian to look after them. With 4 younger siblings and 2 older ones exiled, Julian was forced to abandon his childhood and become the parent with Emma by his side as a parabatai. Emma is eager to discover who murdered her parents back then and she’s ready to fight any kind of evil to do so.
I love the adventures in this book. It was really fast paced with different emotional character stories going on. It’s really easy to love all the characters and get sucked in to their drama because they all make you sympathetic towards them. Mark and Ty with their unique but amazing souls, Livvy with her brother issues, Dru with her shyness and little Tavvy and his innocence… I think in the end, more than the action packed scenes, it is this family which will win over your heart.
I got lucky last time as I read the mortal instruments when all the parts were out so I didn’t really have to wait on new books but I do this time. I don’t know how I’ll do it, because I need my next book fix so bad. I have never in all my reading life, liked other ‘spin offs’ more than the originals but this might be an exception! This story was loooooong, but it was exactly what I needed, because who wants a good book to ever end? If you didn’t notice already, I really really liked this book and I really wish you’d read it.
