My Rating: 5 stars out of 5
Probably one of the best books I have read in 2016 hands down. I love this new version of a fairy tale Amy Harmon created and made me fall in love with. Amy Harmon is my queen. I love everything she writes because she is magic. The Bird and the Sword just shows how talented she is as she chose to write in a genre which is different to her usual style.
Lark has a power which involves using words, spells in a way, to make things happen. However, she cannot use her voice since her mother did her own spell right before she died. Those who have powers are not accepted therefore most hide it in fear of being punished. Lark also must hide her power from the world. Lark is very lonely but she has Boojohni, a troll who is committed to protecting her.
I loved living in this world of magic and kingdoms. There is a lot going on from beginning, with an impending war due to an attack from some strange bird creatures they must all overcome. There is a lot going on and lots of things which you question along the way. But it all comes together beautifully.
The king, Tiras, is a very different sort of king to what the people in this book world are used to. He’s kind, compassionate and brave. He is not a tyrant. Definitely better than any royalty I have ever seen in any fairytale. I was also completely taken with Lark’s character. I sympathised with her since she was always so alone but still she managed to find the little things that made her happy. She was fierce and she was never afraid to take what she wanted. I lived for their scenes together. They made such an interesting pair but perfect for each other.
Just go read the book if you haven’t already.
